Community Building

 

Please make sure you follow the steps listed below when building up your community in your classroom:

  1. Use your own classroom management system. For example: a clip system, table points, warnings, etc. Please make sure you have a designated "quiet" space in your classroom where kids can go to regroup when they are struggling to self-regulate. Make sure you have agreed upon classroom rules that students have bought into (see example below).

  • Listen and follow directions.

  • Raise your hand before speaking and leaving your seat.

  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

  • Respect your classmates and your teacher.

2.  If students continue to break classroom rules, contact the parent.  Send a note home requiring signature, or call!  If needed, help the parent come up with a logical consequence.  Maybe retain student at lunch/recess until signed letter is returned, and have the parent come in for a meeting if need be. 

 

3.  If rules continue to be broken, and you are in grades 3-8, you may assign the student detention, by clicking on the link below and filling out the form properly.  Remember, a parent or guardian must approve of the detention day.  

 

4.  If a student continues to break classroom rules, and the previous interventions aren't working, set up an SST meeting by clicking on the form below. 

Ideally, you are giving rewards for quality of work students produce and consequences for not following the basic rules of the classroom. The goal is to not lower the bar of student behavior by rewarding expected behaviors.

 

Sending students out of the classroom:

 

We want to ensure all students feel a part of the classroom community, and sending the students to the office or to another classroom gives the message that they are not welcome.  Please make sure you have a quiet space in your classroom designated for taking cool downs and breaks.  This helps the students learn to self-regulate and calm themselves down, while still remaining in the classroom where learning is happening.  

Students should only be sent out of the classroom for the following reasons:

 

  1. Physical fight

  2. Physical aggression (throwing things, threatening others)

  3. Endangering self or others

Reasons NOT to send students out of the classroom:

  1. Defiance

  2. Not working

  3. Back-talking

  4. Breaking classroom rules 

 

These behaviors need to be resolved within the classroom and by communicating with parents. Students should want to be engaged with what is happening in the classroom, and should see you as their leader.  The goal is that students will want to be a part of the learning community, and not be separated from the group. 

 

Detention:

Students in grades 3-8 are eligible for detention when they continue to break rules.  When assigning detention, teachers must input all information

into the detention spreadsheet, linked below.   

Outside Classroom Incident:

 

Charter assistants will be given referral slips for inappropriate behaviors outside of the classroom.  These slips will go into a box in Mark's office, and will be distributed to teachers at the end of the day.

 

  1. Please review the referral slip and respond as appropriate.  

  2. Talk to the student, then decide if you need to take further action such as calling home, keeping student in from recess, loss of computer time, detention, etc.  Be smart about your response to the incident.  

  3. Log the incident and consequence in Illuminate.  If it is a major incident such as a fight, Mark will take care of logging these incidents. 

  4. If you decide to assign detention, you still must fill out the detention spreadsheet. 

 

Inside Classroom Incident:

If an incident happens inside the classroom that doesn't require admin response, please follow these steps:

  1. Log incident in Illuminate by the end of the day

  2. Follow up with whatever consequence you decided
